ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Two Rochester men charged with manslaughter after police say they killed a woman while they were street racing early Saturday morning, were arraigned in Rochester City Court Monday.

Jose Surrino and Jose Vazquez, both 39, pleaded not guilty. They’re charged with second-degree manslaughter after Surrino reportedly struck and killed Laureen Benfante Greczyn, 46, just before 12:30 Saturday morning on Lake Avenue.

According to court documents and witness statements, Surrino and Vazquez were street racing in the southbound lanes of Lake Avenue when Surrino is believed to have struck Greczyn.

Witnesses say the impact threw Greczyn 170 feet. She died at the scene. Those same witnesses say Surrino stopped and admitted hitting the woman, but said it wasn’t his fault because she darted into the road.

Surrino and Vazquez remain in the Monroe County Jail.

Surrino is being held on $50,000 cash bail and Vazquez $40,000. They’re both due back in court later this week.
