New York State may be better prepared to battle terrorism going into 2017.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the results of “Operation Safeguard,” which shows the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Office of Counter Terrorism completed more than 600 counter terrorism exercises this year.

The exercises were performed at businesses and organizations across the state to test employees’ knowledge of suspicious activity.

In January of last year, law enforcement did have to handle a real terroristic threat from Emanuel Lutchman of Rochester who planned to attack the Merchant’s Grill.

Officials canceled the annual New Year’s fireworks display in downtown Rochester due to those security concerns.

Lutchman pleaded guilty to to conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
