ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An 18-year old faces several charges, including attempted murder.

He’s accused of setting an early morning fire at a Rochester resident-hotel.

The fire happened at the Elk Place Hotel on North Clinton Avenue near Andrews Street shortly after 2 a.m.

The fire department says that 53 people had to evacuate the building. One man was injured attempting to put out the fire.

Rochester police say this fire was intentionally set.

Police arrested Dylan Kincaid of Rochester and charged the 18-year-old with arson, attempted murder and assault.

Authorities believe Kincaid set a mattress on fire on the third floor of the building.

One man was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with hand and arm injuries after police say he broke the glass to the fire extinguisher case and activated the fire alarm.

“Under these particular conditions because of the type and size of the building a second alarm fire was called by the line deputy chief for additional resources,” said Jason Ashton, Rochester Fire Department. “The fire was out about nine minutes later.”

The fire was contained to just the one hotel room.

The fire department says damage is minimal so residents are able to return to their rooms.
