ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — New Bills head coach Sean McDermott was formally introduced at a press conference at One Bills Drive where he was joined by Bills owner Terry Pegula and general manager Doug Whaley.

The 42-year-old is the team’s 20th coach and the seventh since Wade Phillips left the team after the 2000 season. The upcoming season will mark is 19th with the NFL, but his first as a head coach.

He’s spent the last six seasons as defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers and he’s credited with coaching the Panthers’ defense to a top ten ranking four of the last five years.

With his recent success in Carolina, McDermott was a popular coaching candidate among the number of vacancies across the NFL, but McDermott said, “I’ve done my research, this was the best job on the market.”

One of the major issues the Bills face this offseason is how to handle an increasingly delicate quarterback situation. McDermott wouldn’t saying anything concrete on Tyrod Taylor, but did mention the importance of the quarterback position and that all players will be evaluated.

McDermott was conservative in his response to a question about recent coaching staff hires. Reports surfaced Thursday night regarding several staff position hires, but he would not confirm those rumors.

Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid endorsed the Bills hire. He released a statement saying in part:

“Sean is a smart guy that works really hard and has all the intangibles lined up for him. He’s really going to be a tremendous head coach. I think the Buffalo Bills made the right decision there.”

Reid wasn’t the only current NFL coach to offer glowing praise for McDermott. Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin released saying, in part:

“Sean’s a great coach, but he’s an even better person. He is intelligent and very thoughtful. He’s got natural leadership skills. The Buffalo Bills are in great hands under his leadership.”
