BRIGHTON, N.Y. — A Rochester man is charged in a hit-and-run crash last week, after which a woman was found lying upon South Clinton Avenue in the town of Brighton.

Tommy Jackson, 28, faces charges ranging from leaving the scene of a personal injury accident to making false statements to traffic violations.

Destiny Forbes, 29, of Rochester, was crossing the street near the Brookdale Senior Living Community Friday night when she was hit. She was taken to a Rochester hospital and initially listed in critical condition. Police on Tuesday called her injuries serious and life-threatening.

Jackson says he didn’t realize he hit someone.

“It was dark, wet, raining. [My friend and I] were tired. As soon as I turned, I didn’t know I hit somebody. I ran home and told Pop about it. And we went back to the scene,” Jackson said.

Jackson is a foster child of 90-year-old Clark McDonald, who says when they got back to the scene, police told them someone had been hit.

McDonald says he told police he was behind the wheel.

“I shouldn’t have done that. But in the state my son was in, I didn’t want him to have to go through anything,” said McDonald.

Brighton Police Chief Mark Henderson says investigators quickly determined McDonald’s story did not add up and would eventually charge Jackson with the crime.

On Tuesday, both father and son had a message for Destiny Forbes and her family.

“Miss, I’m terribly sorry. I truly am a man of faith. To me, all life is precious. That’s why I went back, [because] I wanted to make sure,” said McDonald. “And [Jackson] wanted to. He said ‘Yeah, Pop.’ He couldn’t live with himself if he thought he had hurt someone.”

“I’m sorry for whatever happened. It wasn’t my intention,” said Jackson, who is out on bail.

Brookdale Senior Living released the following statement Tuesday:

“Our associates are important members of the Brookdale family. We are sorry to see one of our own going through this difficult situation. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with her and her family. We are unable to provide any further details about her at this time.”
