Off-duty parole officer killed in Canandaigua shootout

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Corrections confirmed Wednesday night that the person killed in the shootout at the Pinnacle North Development in Canandaigua with police was an off-duty parole officer.

According to the city police chief, the officer went into the apartment and that’s when there was an exchange of gunfire with another person.

However, the management at the complex sent an internal email to residents explaining what they know. In it, they say they called police when they couldn’t contact the neighbor after receiving a request to check in on them.

Morgan Communities officials say police were let into the apartment and spoke with that individual, an officer was shot at and that officer returned fire.

The city police chief says the officer was not hit.

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision sent an emailed statement later Wednesday night providing more information, saying in part:

“The Department is aware of a tragic incident involving an off-duty parole officer, who is now deceased.

“Although we are unable to comment due to the ongoing investigation, we grieve for the loss of one of our own.”
