ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The toddler who police say was shot in the head by his father last week has died from his injuries.

Two-year-old Zayden Phillips died at Strong Memorial Hospital. This follows an incident late Friday morning when the toddler was shot inside his home on Walnut Street in Rochester.

The victim’s father, 36-year-old Charles Timothy Phillips, is charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

He’s being held without bail as he has prior felony convictions.

A search warrant of the home turned up a handgun.

Prosecutors say Phillips acted recklessly.

According to court paperwork, Zayden was shot in the head by a round fired from an illegal 9-millimeter pistol. Police say when they found the gun it was loaded with 9-live rounds.

Neighbors say the loss of a child makes this tragedy especially painful.

“I’m particularly sorry about the young man – the young boy – that just lost his life,” said Amelia Pettit, who lives around the corner. “That’s a shame. He hasn’t even begun to live his life.”

A grand jury will determine if the father will now face additional charges.
