Passenger injured in Lake Avenue crash dies

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Police say a Rochester man injured in a Saturday afternoon crash on Lake Avenue died from his injuries at the hospital.

A car turned in front of a Jeep at the intersection of Lake and Phelps Avenues shortly after 4:30 p.m., according to police, who said that before officers arrived, the driver of the car escaped the wreck and ran from the scene.

Still in the car was Maurice Johnson, trapped and suffering from a leg injury. He was extricated and taken to the hospital, but later died. Johnson was 40.

Two people inside the Jeep were evaluated for minor injuries at the hospital.

Police continue to look for the driver of the car, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
