I am profoundly disappointed in the recent Supreme Court decision which delivered a significant blow to the union movement in America. America’s unions and the critically important concept of collective bargaining are responsible for so many of the rights and protections workers enjoy in our country. Without unions and collective bargaining we would not have a 40 hour work week or so many of the workplace health and safety protections we all take for granted today. The City of Rochester’s workforce is largely comprised of union labor and I am proud to call them my colleagues, because they are dedicated each and every day to doing the best possible job for the citizens of this city – their neighbors. I strive to treat our union workforce fairly and to provide them with fair wages and decent working conditions and, while we do not always agree on every matter related to workforce issues, I greatly respect the public employee unions that represent their interests and I believe in their right to do so. Today the Supreme Court made the wrong call and I will work alongside my brothers and sisters in our public sector unions to ensure our city workers do not lose as a result.
