An Orleans County home is a total loss after an early morning fire.

East Shelby Fire Department officials said the two-alarm blaze started in the kitchen around 5 a.m. and quickly spread through the Shelby home.

A woman was still inside the home when firefighters arrived. She was trying to get her dogs out to safety.

“It was fully engulfed when I arrived,” said Deb Taylor, an assistant chief with the fire department. “The lady was out, the dogs were out, but not all were accounted for, I think. We just started pulled lines and did an exterior attack on the fire.”

Three of the dogs that lived in the home were rescued; two are still missing.

The Red Cross is assisting the homeowners.
